And the winner is . . .

Have you heard the news about the 2008 Caldecott and Newbery Medal winners? These are awards given for the year's best children's books; the Caldecott Medal is for illustrations and the Newbery Medal is for the literature.

This year's Caldecott Medal goes to The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. While usually a picture book wins this award, this is a novel for older kids and is a story told through the pictures as well as the words. When you see these illustrations you will understand why it won--they are beautiful! And the story is really exciting too! Come in to check out this unusual book!

This year's Newbury Medal winner is Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village by Laura Amy Schlitz and is about the lives of medieval children--from their perspective. It is still on its way to our library, but it also sounds pretty cool. Stay tuned.

Hope to see you soon!

Like music? There's a special day coming up!

Kids playing music for kids! We're having a free concert this coming Saturday, January 19 at 2:00 pm by children from the Community Music School. It will feature kids playing the guitar and violin, as well as other instruments. Prepare to be impressed and inspired--and refreshed, because snacks will be served!

I can play chopsticks on the piano--think I could participate?

What a week!

I'm tired! We had a busy week at the library with the start of storytimes, our game time afternoon and our new mini reading program "Read Me A Snowman!" I think I'll curl up with one of my new favorite picture books, Dog and Bear: Two Friends, Three Stories by Laura Vaccaro Seeger.

And then I'll rest up for next week's fun! How about you? Got any favorite books that you like to read when you need some quiet time?

ahhhhhh. . . .sit back and relax. . .

Hmmm. . .I've got so many favorites. . .Sudoku, Clue, Scrabble, Dragonopoly. . .

Can't wait to play!

Happy New Year!

It's a brand new year kids! I don't know about you, but I made some resolutions for 2008--things I'm going to try to do:

-Read more books, especially ones about dragons
-Think of more ways to make the Children's Department the coolest place in East Longmeadow
-Eat fewer fried goblins

How about you? Is there anything you're going to try to do this year? Maybe come visit me more often?

2008 is gonna be great!
Leroy :)
